TL;DR
- Almost always one of: unverified GBP, suspended GBP (check spam folder), bad address, duplicate listings, or misconfigured service area.
- Verification is mandatory — unverified profiles don't appear on Maps at all.
- If none of those apply, you exist on Maps but are being outranked. That's a different problem with a different fix.
The 60-second answer
If your business isn’t showing up on Google Maps, the cause is almost always one of five things, in order of frequency: (1) your Google Business Profile isn’t verified, (2) you’re suspended without realizing it (Google notifies via email, which often goes to spam), (3) your business address is incorrect or fails Google’s address verification, (4) Google has flagged duplicate or conflicting listings for your business, or (5) you’re a service-area business that hasn’t configured your service area properly. Below is the diagnostic for each, in the same priority order.
Step 1: Confirm your GBP is verified
Go to business.google.com and log in. If you see a “Verify now” button or a yellow banner asking you to verify, that’s your problem. Verification options in 2026 include video verification (a 30-second video of your business and signage), postcard (5-14 days), phone (immediate for some categories), and email (rare). Verification is mandatory — unverified profiles do not appear on Maps at all.
Step 2: Check for suspension
Suspensions are common and Google’s notification often gets buried in email. Common suspension triggers in 2026:
- Using a virtual office or coworking address as your verified address
- Using a UPS Store box or iPostal1 mailbox
- Listing a service area but also keeping a fake storefront address
- Adding keywords to your business name (“ABC Plumbing — 24 Hour Emergency Service Raleigh” instead of “ABC Plumbing”)
- Multiple listings for the same business at the same address
- Multiple listings of the same business across nearby cities (city-bombing)
- Mass review changes (reviews that all appeared on the same day from new accounts)
If you’re suspended, the path back is via the GBP support reinstatement form. Be honest about what happened and provide proof of your real business operation. Reinstatement typically takes 5-30 days.
Step 3: Address verification problems
Google’s address verification has gotten stricter. Common issues:
- Address doesn’t exist in Google’s database. Common in new construction. You’ll need to wait for Google’s index to update or contact GBP support.
- Address conflicts with a residential pin. If you operate from home, you should be a service-area business (SAB) with no public address — not a storefront.
- Address is a virtual office or PO box. Both are explicit policy violations.
- Address is shared with another business. Suite/unit number is mandatory if so.
Step 4: Duplicate or conflicting listings
If two or more GBP listings exist for your business, Google may show neither one. Search Google Maps for your business name + address. If you see duplicates, claim them all under one account, then request merger via GBP support. Common sources of duplicates: a previous owner created one, a directory site auto-created one, you accidentally created a second one when you couldn’t find the first.
Step 5: Service-area business configuration
If you don’t have a public storefront and serve customers at their location (plumbers, electricians, HVAC, mobile services), you should be configured as a service-area business. The correct setup:
- Hide your address (Google verifies it but doesn’t show it publicly)
- List 5-12 specific cities you serve (not “all of NC”, not 30 cities)
- Make your service area realistic — what you’d actually drive to within 30-45 minutes
Misconfigured SABs (showing the home address publicly, listing too many cities, listing cities you don’t actually serve) get suppressed in Maps results.
If none of the above is your problem
If your GBP is verified, not suspended, has a valid address, no duplicates, and is correctly configured but you’re still not appearing — the issue is competitive ranking, not visibility. You exist on Maps but you’re being outranked. The fix in that case is the standard local SEO playbook: more reviews, more recent photos, more GBP posts, optimized service categories, and a website with proper schema. Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Google Business Profile is suspended?
Sign in to business.google.com. A suspended profile shows a banner at the top explaining the suspension. Google also emails the owner email on file — check spam. If you can't find the notice, contact GBP support and ask them to confirm your status.
Can I use my home address for my Google Business Profile?
Only if you operate from home and customers don't come to your location. In that case, configure as a service-area business and hide the address. Listing your home address publicly when it's not a real storefront violates Google's policy.
How long does GBP reinstatement take?
Typically 5-30 days. Be honest in the reinstatement form, provide photos of your real business operations, and don't resubmit multiple times — that delays the process.
Can I have multiple Google Business Profiles for one business?
Only for legitimate multiple physical locations. One profile per location, with a real verifiable address per location. Creating multiple profiles for the same physical business is a policy violation that gets all of them suspended.
Why does my competitor show up but I don't?
If your profile is verified and configured correctly, the answer is usually competitive ranking — not visibility. Their profile has more reviews, more photos, more recent activity, more service categories, or stronger website signals. Audit theirs vs yours element by element.
